A Minister For Young People

Updated: Apr 2, 2020

Currently there is no Minister for Young People in federal politics. Without representation, the interests of young people are being continuously sidelined. A Youth Minister was included in every cabinet from 1984 to 2013. Currently the portfolio responsibilities exist within the Education Portfolio.

It is our position that issues effecting young people go far beyond education, and extend into every aspect of Government. In the same way Australia has a Minister for Women, a Minister for Indigenous Health and Aged Care and a Minister for Indigenous Affairs, young people are should be considered a unique group requiring dedicated representation.

Australian Federal Parliament has no Minister for Youth in 2018

There are many individuals and groups pushing for the re-introduction of a Minister for Youth. If you want to know more, there's a great summary on Triple J's Hack and you can read more about some of the supporters from Pro Bono Australia.
